About shipping cars to and from California

Whipshipper moves cars in and out of California every week. We pick up at your door and deliver to wherever your car is going, whether that is one town over or all the way across the country.

California is the biggest car shipping market in the country, but Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and San Diego are separate markets with separate pricing. CARB rules and HOA gate access can slow pickups, so flexible dates save you money. Snowbird and tech relocation drive year round volume.

Popular lanes from California include California to Texas, California to Florida, California to New York. We also handle inbound moves from those same regions every day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from California?

It ranges with distance. On our current California board the cheapest well supplied run is Fresno to Salt Lake City, UT from $627, and one of the longer well supplied runs is San Jose to New York, NY at 2,549 miles from $1,597. Enclosed adds roughly sixty percent to either. Those are open carrier starting rates for a standard sedan, so a truck or SUV runs higher.

How long does it take to ship a car to or from California?

It tracks distance closely. A shorter California run like Sacramento to San Diego, CA moves in 1-3, while a long haul like San Jose to New York, NY takes 7-10. Add one to three days on the front for dispatch, which is the wait between booking and a truck actually being assigned.

How many routes do you actually run out of California?

2,044 priced lanes originating in 23 California cities and reaching 47 states. The average haul leaving California is 1,366 miles. That depth matters more than it sounds: lanes with regular carrier movement dispatch in days, and lanes without it can sit for a week or more.

Is it cheaper to ship into California or out of it?

Usually not the same, and the difference is real money. Carriers price the lighter direction lower because moving a car beats running empty. Right now our best inbound run is New York, NY into San Jose from $1,597. Always quote the exact direction you need rather than assuming it is symmetrical.

What is the $99 deposit?

It locks your rate and holds the carrier on your pickup window. It is non refundable once a carrier accepts the job, and the balance is due to the driver on delivery. Your quoted price is your final price, which is not the industry norm and is worth checking with anyone else you call.

Do you pick up at my door in California?

Yes, door to door is the default. The carrier comes as close to your address as the truck can legally park. In tight neighborhoods we may meet at a nearby lot, and we tell you that in advance rather than on the morning of pickup.

Can you ship from Los Angeles?

Yes. Los Angeles is one of our strongest pickup markets in California, and carriers run through it every week, so dispatch is usually 24 to 72 hours. San Diego is similar. Addresses well outside the metro ring can take a little longer, since a driver needs a reason to come that way.

Is my car insured during transport?

Yes. Every carrier we dispatch carries cargo insurance, we verify the certificate before the job is assigned, and you get proof of coverage at pickup. Most carry $100,000 to $250,000 in cargo cover. Personal belongings left in the vehicle are not covered by that policy, which catches people out.

Open or enclosed for a California route?

Open is the standard and it is what about ninety five percent of cars in the country ship on. Enclosed costs fifty to seventy percent more and adds full weather and road protection. Pick enclosed if the vehicle is a classic, an exotic, or worth over $75,000. On longer California hauls the weather exposure argument gets stronger simply because the car is out there for more days.

What if I am not home for pickup or delivery?

Name an alternate contact, whether that is family, a neighbour, or a dealer, and they can release or receive the vehicle with a signed authorisation in advance. Most people shipping out of California during a move end up doing exactly this.

Do you ship non running cars from California?

Yes, provided it rolls, brakes, and steers so the carrier can winch it on. It adds $100 to $200 and we need to know at booking so we dispatch a truck with a winch. Telling us at pickup instead means the truck leaves without the car.

When is the best time of year to ship from California?

Rates move with carrier supply, and supply moves with the season. Booking seven to ten days ahead rather than two or three consistently gets a better number than any discount, because it lets us wait for the right truck instead of taking whatever is available. The seasonal detail specific to this region is covered further up this page.

What to know about shipping a car in California

We price 2,044 lanes out of California, originating in 23 cities and reaching 47 states. The average haul leaving the state runs 1,366 miles. The spread is wide: the shortest well supplied route we run is Sacramento to San Diego, CA at 473 miles, while San Jose to New York, NY covers 2,549 miles in 7-10.

Season and weather in the pacific

The Pacific coast has the mildest transport calendar in the country, and for most of the year weather is simply not a factor. The exceptions are wildfire season, which can close interstates with no notice from midsummer into autumn, and winter rain in the Pacific Northwest, which slows things without stopping them.

Best time to book from California: Nearly year round. Watch wildfire advisories from July through October and give the Pacific Northwest an extra day in deep winter.

Roads, access, and equipment in California

Car freight through California runs on I-5 the length of the state, I-10, I-40, and I-80 heading east. Where your address sits relative to those corridors matters more to your price than the mileage does, because a carrier already on the route can add your car cheaply and one that has to deviate cannot.

Los Angeles handles more vehicle transport volume than most entire states, which makes southern California the cheapest place in the country to originate a long haul. Northern California prices separately and higher.

Coastal cities present the same access problem as the northeast, with steep grades on top. San Francisco in particular defeats full size carriers in most residential neighbourhoods. Southern California is the opposite: wide roads, enormous carrier density, and the easiest loading conditions in the country.

For California that means a Los Angeles pickup is straightforward and usually dispatches quickly, while an address well outside the metro ring may need a shorter truck or a meeting point a few minutes away. We tell you which applies before you pay anything rather than on the morning of pickup.

How freight moves through the pacific

This is the busiest vehicle transport market in the United States. Los Angeles alone handles more car shipping volume than most entire states, which makes the west coast the cheapest place in the country to originate a long haul, and it means the eastbound transcontinental lanes are consistently well supplied.

You can see that in our own California pricing. The best value route on the board right now is Fresno to Salt Lake City, UT at $627 for 508 miles, which works out to roughly 123 cents a mile. Rates like that only exist where trucks are already running the corridor.

The mistake that costs pacific shippers money

Assuming a northern California address gets southern California pricing. The two markets behave differently enough that they may as well be separate regions.

California metro by metro

Carrier depth is not evenly spread across a state. These are the California markets we price directly, with how many lanes each one sits on. More lanes means shorter waits between booking and dispatch.

  • Bakersfield sits on 80 priced lanes reaching 28 states. Busiest run is Denver, CO at 824 miles, 2-4, from $895.
  • Fresno sits on 89 priced lanes reaching 30 states. Busiest run is El Paso, TX at 833 miles, 2-4, from $903.
  • Los Angeles sits on 271 priced lanes reaching 47 states. Busiest run is New York, NY at 2,446 miles, 7-10, from $1,540.
  • Modesto sits on 47 priced lanes reaching 26 states. Busiest run is Portland, OR at 551 miles, 1-3, from $663.
  • Oxnard sits on 49 priced lanes reaching 25 states. Busiest run is Tucson, AZ at 493 miles, 1-3, from $713.
  • Riverside sits on 60 priced lanes reaching 27 states. Busiest run is El Paso, TX at 650 miles, 1-3, from $748.
  • Sacramento sits on 83 priced lanes reaching 32 states. Busiest run is El Paso, TX at 968 miles, 2-4, from $1,018.
  • San Diego sits on 273 priced lanes reaching 47 states. Busiest run is New York, NY at 2,428 miles, 7-10, from $1,530.

Moving to or from California

You do not have to be present at both ends. Authorise someone else to release or receive the car and the vehicle travels on its own schedule instead of yours, which for most people is the entire point of shipping it rather than driving it.

Crossing a border rather than the country? We run Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, and Washington on the same equipment and the same terms.

Before you book anywhere, three things are worth reading: how to verify a carrier’s authority and insurance yourself, the difference between a broker and a carrier and why it changes who is liable for your car, and the fifteen minute checklist that protects you if a damage claim ever comes up.

California car shipping distances, transit times, and rates

We run 2,044 priced lanes out of California, originating in 23 cities and reaching 47 states. The average haul leaving California is 1,366 miles, which puts most of this state in multi day transit territory rather than the overnight regional runs you see in the dense northeast corridor.

Read those numbers as a starting point rather than a promise. Distance sets the floor on a rate, but it is not what moves the price week to week. Carrier supply on the specific corridor does, and you can see it in the table above: New York, NY prices at about 63 cents a mile while San Diego, CA runs closer to 146 cents. That is a 2.3x difference on the same trailer, and none of it is explained by mileage. It is explained by how many trucks are already running each route.

The 25 routes above average 1,292 miles at an average open rate of $1,053. Enclosed on the same lanes runs roughly sixty percent higher. Quotes built only on mileage are the ones that get renegotiated at pickup, because mileage is the one input that never changes and everything else does.

Shipping a car into California

Inbound is not the outbound rate in reverse. Corridors run heavier one direction than the other, and carriers price the light direction lower because they would rather move a car than run empty. If you are shipping into California rather than out of it, these are the origins with the most movement toward you.

The best value inbound run right now is New York, NY to San Jose, at roughly 63 cents a mile.

How much does it cost to ship a car from California?

The honest answer is that it depends on three things, in this order: how far, what the vehicle is, and how much carrier traffic your corridor already has. The table below works those out against California’s actual lane mix rather than a national average, using the shortest, middle, and longest well supplied routes we currently run out of the state.

Multipliers by vehicle class are the same ones our quote engine applies, so these ranges track what you would actually be quoted.
