The Pacific coast has the mildest transport calendar in the country, and for most of the year weather is simply not a factor. The exceptions are wildfire season, which can close interstates with no notice from midsummer into autumn, and winter rain in the Pacific Northwest, which slows things without stopping them.

Roads, access, and equipment in Washington

Car freight through Washington runs on I-5 north to south and I-90 east over the Cascades. Where your address sits relative to those corridors matters more to your price than the mileage does, because a carrier already on the route can add your car cheaply and one that has to deviate cannot.

Seattle is the main market and also the mainland port for Alaska traffic. I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass is subject to winter closures, which separates the western and eastern halves of the state for days at a time.

Coastal cities present the same access problem as the northeast, with steep grades on top. San Francisco in particular defeats full size carriers in most residential neighbourhoods. Southern California is the opposite: wide roads, enormous carrier density, and the easiest loading conditions in the country.

For Washington that means a Seattle pickup is straightforward and usually dispatches quickly, while an address well outside the metro ring may need a shorter truck or a meeting point a few minutes away. We tell you which applies before you pay anything rather than on the morning of pickup.

How freight moves through the pacific

This is the busiest vehicle transport market in the United States. Los Angeles alone handles more car shipping volume than most entire states, which makes the west coast the cheapest place in the country to originate a long haul, and it means the eastbound transcontinental lanes are consistently well supplied.
